At the Edge of Erhai
A city held between the lake, the mountains, and the changing afternoon light.

## DALI & ERHAI LAKE · YUNNAN, CHINA
An afternoon when mountain, water, city, and light came together
Along the shores of Erhai Lake, Dali unfolds between water and mountains.
Cangshan Mountain rises beyond the city as warm afternoon light moves across the landscape. Dramatic clouds drift overhead, the lake stretches quietly across the foreground, and buildings trace the shoreline between them.
I captured this original photograph during an afternoon exploring Dali, drawn not to a single landmark, but to the harmony of the entire scene — mountain, water, city, clouds, and light sharing one frame.
PLACE — Dali & Erhai Lake, Yunnan, China
Dali sits in one of those rare landscapes where nature feels inseparable from the city itself.
Erhai Lake stretches alongside the city while Cangshan Mountain rises dramatically to the west. Between them, communities, streets, and everyday life occupy a narrow space framed by water and mountains.
That relationship is what makes Dali memorable to me.
It isn't simply a mountain destination or a lakeside city.
It is both.
PURSUIT — An Afternoon Without a Plan
Not every photograph begins with a destination I've traveled hours to reach or a viewpoint I've planned in advance.
Sometimes it begins by simply being there.
I captured this photograph while exploring the shoreline of Erhai Lake during an afternoon in Dali. As I walked, the light gradually shifted across the mountains and city.
There was nowhere in particular I needed to be.
So I stopped.
The clouds were moving slowly overhead. Warm sunlight illuminated parts of the hillside and waterfront. The lake remained calm beneath them.
For a few moments, everything seemed to settle into place.
Some journeys reward us not for how far we go, but for giving ourselves time to wander.
PERSPECTIVE — When Everything Comes Together
What drew me to this scene wasn't one extraordinary subject.
It was the relationship between everything in front of me.
The lake created openness. Cangshan Mountain gave the landscape scale. The city formed a quiet layer between them, while sunlight and clouds changed the mood from moment to moment.
Nature and everyday life didn't feel separate here.
They felt like parts of the same landscape.
Travel often encourages us to move from one famous viewpoint to another. Yet some of my favorite memories come from the spaces in between — walking without a particular photograph in mind and suddenly realizing that the scene in front of me is the one I want to remember.
That quiet sense of balance, presence, and discovery is what I wanted to preserve in this frame.
