Between Earth and Sky
Some places are worth waking before dawn to see differently.
LUXOR, EGYPT
## LUXOR, EGYPT
An ancient landscape, seen from above at first light
Before sunrise, dozens of hot air balloons rise quietly over Luxor as the first light of day reaches the Nile Valley. Desert cliffs glow along the horizon, fields emerge from the morning haze, and colorful balloons drift across a landscape shaped by thousands of years of history.
I captured this original photograph while floating above Luxor in a hot air balloon at sunrise — a perspective that transformed a place I had explored from the ground into something entirely new.
Soft pastel light, immense open space, and the quiet movement of balloons across the sky come together in an image that carries both serenity and a sense of adventure.
PLACE — Luxor, Egypt
Few places carry a sense of history quite like Luxor.
Set along the Nile in southern Egypt, the landscape holds traces of an extraordinary past — fertile land meeting desert, mountains rising beyond the valley, and ancient monuments scattered across a place that has been inhabited for thousands of years.
From the ground, that history feels monumental.
From above, the landscape tells a different story.
PURSUIT — Before the Sun Came Up
This photograph began long before sunrise.
In the darkness of early morning, we made our way to the launch site and watched as enormous balloons slowly came to life — fabric unfolding across the ground, burners illuminating the darkness, and baskets filling with travelers waiting for the day to begin.
Then, almost imperceptibly, we left the ground.
As the sun appeared on the horizon, dozens of balloons rose with us into the morning sky.
There was something magical about experiencing a place so deeply connected to the past while beginning the day from an entirely unfamiliar vantage point.
Some places are worth waking before dawn to see differently.
PERSPECTIVE — An Ancient Landscape from Above
What I remember most was the quiet.
From high above Luxor, the Nile Valley stretched into the distance beneath soft morning light. Desert cliffs framed the horizon while balloons floated at different heights around us.
Everything below suddenly seemed both enormous and small.
Roads became lines. Fields became patterns. The boundary between fertile valley and desert became strikingly clear.
And despite being suspended high above the earth, the experience felt remarkably peaceful — interrupted only occasionally by the roar of the balloon's burner.
For a few moments, it felt as though we weren't traveling through the landscape at all.
We were simply floating above it as another day began.
That feeling of wonder, freedom, and seeing a familiar world differently is what I wanted to preserve in this photograph.
