Chasing the Last Light
Sometimes, the journey isn't about going farther. Sometimes it's about staying a little longer.

## WHITE SANDS, NEW MEXICO
A quiet study of light, stillness, and the desert at sunset
As the final light of day moves across White Sands National Park, the brilliant gypsum dunes begin to transform. Warm golden light settles over the landscape, shadows trace the curves of the sand, and the distant mountains emerge softly along the horizon.
This original photograph was captured at sunset during my journey through New Mexico. With its minimalist composition, gentle tones, and sweeping natural forms, it brings a sense of openness and quiet into the home — a reminder of how dramatically a familiar landscape can change when we stay long enough to notice.
PLACE — White Sands National Park, New Mexico
White Sands is unlike almost anywhere else.
Stretching across southern New Mexico, its vast field of brilliant white gypsum dunes creates an almost otherworldly landscape. As the sun moves lower, the intense brightness of the day gives way to softer tones, elongated shadows, and subtle textures across the sand.
PURSUIT — Chasing the Last Light
I arrived at White Sands in the late afternoon during a road trip through New Mexico, just a few days after photographing Shiprock.
Rather than moving on, I stayed through sunset and watched the landscape slowly change around me.
The white dunes warmed with the final light of day. Shadows grew longer. Curves and textures that had nearly disappeared beneath the bright afternoon sun began to emerge. And as visitors gradually left and daylight faded, the desert became remarkably quiet.
Sometimes the journey isn't about going farther. Sometimes it's about staying a little longer.
PERSPECTIVE — When the Desert Slows Down
What drew me to this moment wasn't simply the sunset. It was the transformation.
The same landscape I had seen only hours earlier suddenly felt completely different — softer, quieter, and more intimate. The constantly changing light revealed forms and details that had been hidden in plain sight.
For me, this photograph is a reminder that some of the most memorable experiences happen when we stop rushing toward the next destination and give a place enough time to reveal itself.
That feeling of stillness is what I wanted to preserve in this frame.
